10 November 2017Watched by HRH The Countess of Wessex, President of the Devon County Agricultural Association, Mr AJ Thomas’ home-bred yearling bull, Bollowal Front Row, took the Native Young Bull of the Year title before fighting off very strong competition from the continental breeds to be crowned the Supreme Champion by Judge, Mr Jimmy McMillan.
Jeff Thomas, from St Just, Cornwall, is one of the country’s leading breeders of Red Ruby Devons. Bollowal Front Row enjoyed a very successful summer show season including Male Champion at Devon County Show, and winning the DCBS Young Bull of the Year title.
“Agri-fest South West has gone from strength-to-strength in recent years and if definitely cementing its place as the region’s premier prime-stock show” says Breed Secretary, Catherine Broomfield, “the quality of livestock at the show is exceptional across all breeds. That Bollowal Front Row was judged Supreme Champion in such a competitive arena is a testament to the quality and relevance of the Red Ruby Devon breed to the future of UK beef production.”
Other class winners included Lisa Roper’s Devon bull calf, Forde Abbey Sydney, and Steve Stamp’s Devon heifer calf Primmore Reed.
Red Ruby Devons also achieved success on the hook; Simon & Grania Phillips from Colleton Manor, Chulmleigh, Devon won their class for Best Steak and the Reserve Overall Championship.
